Sometimes you just have to go for it and throw all of that caution to the wind, like Logan Betz has decided to do with The Last Post. The Last Post, named after a beloved family cabin that Betz spent a lot of time at in his youth, is his songwriting project that he has been hard at work on for some time now.

Today, Betz debuts his new The Last Post single “1999,” a song representative of the nostalgia that motivates a lot of his songwriting. The song has a vintage indie sound and feel to it, a trip down memory lane to a special time like no other. You can find it on the debut The Last Post EP Wayfinder, due for release soon via Rock Paper Records.

Discussing the meaning and purpose of the song, Betz tells us:

“‘1999’ is about falling in love with the right person at the right time. For me, that was at 16 years old when I met my first love who would go on to become my wife. Twenty-five years later, we’re still together and have two kids. This is the first song I wrote intentionally for this project; I had been writing songs for years prior, but this one (no pun intended) just felt right for what I wanted to do and wanted this project to become. I envisioned its direction and its full band sound almost immediately and it’s kind of become the internal anthem for myself and The Last Post.

“Plus, I love that it’s a timestamp of my teenage hood and a period of my life I feel so fondly of; it just makes sense that it would be the first single from the debut EP. ‘1999’ is filled with nostalgia, both in its personal lyrical content, but also in its sound, as it’s definitely influenced by the bands and type of music we grew up on, and fell in love listening to.”

Betz has been a longtime musician, but it wasn’t until recently that he decided it was now or never with his songwriting career. For years, he has toiled as a basement musician, writing songs and stashing them away for some day to come. He originally envisioned that day as one where he would realize his worth as a singer-songwriter. Finally, he came to a mental conclusion that it was never going to be conveniently orchestrated for him. He’d have to go seek that worth out himself, and that’s what he’s done with Wayfinder. The seven-song EP has been in Betz for a long time, and he’s happy to finally be sharing it with others. The songwriting is earnest and emotive, penning songs about mental health struggles, love, relationships, and maybe above all, nostalgia.

Despite The Last Post being spearheaded by him, Betz sought a fuller sound with this project. He originally foresaw it as an intimate acoustic project. But then he began to feel that it might sound too one-dimensional. He played the majority of the instruments in recording Wayfinder, shying away from a more singer-songwriter identity. Perhaps a bit later than he’d like, Wayfinder is the culmination of Betz’s musical journey. He feels like he has found his way, a culmination of his long and still evolving musical journey.
