The Gigantic Franchising Potential of ‘Jurassic World: Rebirth’
The Jurassic World trilogy was a box office smash, with the three pictures bringing in a combined total of just under $4 billion. But the success of the franchise didn’t end there. Universal saw gigantic potential in merchandising the series, from toys to games and spin-offs.
Jurassic World Rebirth is due for release in July and will approach the prehistoric franchise with a fresh angle. The trilogy ran out of steam, but now this offering from a brand new director has another shot at filling cinemagoers with the same feelings they experienced when watching the original, which is precisely what a reboot should do. But how will the studio capitalize on the franchising potential of this new series?
Will the New Picture Be More Like Jurassic Park?
According to the latest reports, Jurassic World Rebirth is going to go heavy on nostalgia. Edwards wants to bring back the awe and excitement of Steven Spielberg’s classic, which was way ahead of its time in terms of visuals and scale. The aim of the game is to take the aspects of what made the first film so iconic and move away from the elaborate additions that made the recent trilogy so convoluted.
The new picture is going to take things back to basics and is designed to be a simple survival story. In the adventure, a team of explorers journey to the site of the original Jurassic Park research facility, where they encounter various species that haven’t featured in previous films. There’s plenty of potential to bring something new to the table, but it could easily recapture the simpler feel of the first movie as well.
Jurassic World Rebirth will Leverage the Franchise
Regardless of whether Jurassic World Rebirth manages to offer similar vibes to the original or not, the picture is set to pull in huge crowds and has a good chance of being the highest earner in the franchise to date. That’s because it has a sprawling series of films and games to use as a springboard and ensure that enough people are interested.
Along with the past films enjoying great success, many related Jurassic World offerings are still prevalent in popular culture. For instance, Jurassic Park is still one of the top slots in the UK. The game was released in 2014 and won various awards at the time. Players still enjoy the way it pays homage to the original. There’s also the planned Jurassic Park: Survival game that may be released alongside the new picture.
The cast could play a huge role in making Jurassic World Rebirth the most successful of the whole series at the box office. Scarlett Johannson is the film’s lead, and the former world’s highest-paid actress has the power to attract millions of viewers. She’s the highest-grossing box office actress of all time, and it was a wise move to cast her. She’s joined by a few other fan favourites, including the two-time Oscar winner Mahershala Ali.
Jurassic World Rebirth has a great chance of taking the franchise back to its roots and reminding viewers what made the original so special. It will most likely be a box office smash, and could lead to sequels of its own, spin-offs, games and new forms of Jurassic entertainment we’ve never seen before.
