Alternative world music duo The Beatroot Road, made up of Mark Russell and Hazel Fairbairn, recently released their fourth single, “Morbid Love,” a song about the self-destructive aftermath of heartache by a wronged woman.

Talking about “Morbid Love,” The Beatroot Road says, “It’s been recorded over 40 years in 3 sessions and is a Punkabilly Celtic / North American fusion. We are delighted to have guest vocalist Katie Burke from Nashville on this one.

Produced by The Beatroot Road, “Morbid Love” was written by Demmy James and ‘Apes.’ The guitar was played by Richard ‘Titch’ English, with motorcycle cog played by Harvey B, and Mark Russell on the drums, all recorded in the ’80s.

The fiddle solos and keyboards were recorded in the late ’90s, while the vocals, rockabilly fiddle, bass, and bodhran were recorded in 2022. The bassline was written by Dee Dee Hoptone in the ’80s, but was not recorded along with the other instruments. So, thirty years later, the bass was played by Mark Russell.

Vancouver filmmaker Atsu Kanno created the video, which features actors Yoonie Kim and Monica Pop.

“Morbid Love” rolls out on a pushing, punkabilly beat topped by frenetic layers of harmonics, forging the sensation of emotions in turmoil. A tight, tension-inducing fiddle imbues the tune with twisting, feverish energy, evoking the feeling of incipient hysteria. Burke’s evocative vocals reveal a vortex of visceral passion.

Like a thwarted animal on the loose, “Morbid Love” rampages hither and thither, discharging the wild momentum of distress.
