Sometimes letting the music do all the talking is the most effective strategy, one employed superbly by Sugar Bomb. Today, the band is proud to introduce their latest song, “IDK.” Still a new group, this is only Sugar Bomb’s second proper single release after their debut “Rubber.”

“IDK” well illustrates a dreamier side to the instrumental ensemble as they begin to demonstrate the range of their musical abilities. All very capable players with diverse backgrounds, that range is impressive and sure to expand even more as the trio get more musically comfortable with each other.

Commenting on “IDK,” bassist Eli Kahn states:

“This track was written by our good friend Dylan Hannan (who plays tenor saxophone and flute on the recording), originally for the now-defunct free-jazz octet HELLCRAB. We started playing it as a trio, and it just kind of stuck. We knew when we recorded it, we had to have Dylan bring his magic to it.”

The release of “Rubber” and “IDK” will all come to a head with the release of the debut Sugar Bomb EP, Sweet. Due to be released in early summer, Sweet will be a full demonstration of the band’s fantastic abilities. Fully instrumental, the EP will overlap with several different sounds and influences. It features a mix of psychedelia and soul, influenced by the members’ individual musical backgrounds.

Kahn worked on beats for rapper Danny Brown’s hypemen, Dopehead, and keyboardist Jacob Bruner has actively worked with funk ensemble Empire Strikes Brass as a touring horn player. The band is rounded out by drummer Joe Enright, who has worked in a number of different genres. Their collective musical adaptability has made them popular around their hometown of Asheville, North Carolina.

Now with their EP on the way, the band also has a debut LP in the works titled Sweet + Explosive. With that coming in June, Sugar Bomb seem destined to become one of the most interesting and diverse jazz acts on the scene. To catch this crew live, check out their show dates.
