Very few bands pursue variety and musical diversity like Phuture Memoriez does. Most artists find a space in which they feel comfortable and don’t often stray outside of that box. That’s not the case with Phuture Memoriez, the synthpunk trailblazers from Vancouver. We have featured the band a couple of times in the past, and we’re happy to help debut their latest music video for “MOUTH YELLOW.” The song is from their latest album, Play Cobra, which emerged in the fall of 2023. The band is still promoting the album as they continue to work on new music.

Play Cobra is a concept record that pays homage to John Zorn’s musical improv game Cobra. By design, each of the ten tracks on Play Cobra is recorded at the same tempo of 138 BPM. They are meant to be individual compact bursts of explosive sounds, blending electronic, dance, and industrial music.

Discussing the video and its relation to their album, the band states;

“In this haunting music video, subway passengers mysteriously emit a glowing yellow light from their mouths. In a separate underground space, a twitching figure also exhibits the yellow phenomenon – the two spaces eerily connected through light and energy. Lyrics like ‘P for pool,’ ‘R for Runner,’ and ‘S for substitute’ form player rules and were pulled from the instruction manual for the niche game Cobra by John Zorn. Ending with ‘It’s a game you have to play’ leans into a synopsis of the entire record.”

If you are a follower of Phuture Memoriez at any level, then you’d know that concept albums are their preference for presenting their music. They have released three concept records, including Cobra, with a fourth set to be released in the fall. Their debut record was inspired by the legendary book from Sun Tzu, The Art of War, and then their sophomore record looked at the concept of death and dying. Not just a set of songs, the band considers their records to be full multimedia experiences. They are more projects than anything, featuring both audio and visual elements. There is a lot of use of lights, videos, and projections that tie the experience and mood to the music. With such a diverse approach, it’s no wonder that many Phuture Memoriez songs have been featured in films.

The band’s guerrilla-style music videos are truly like no other. It’s a lot like their recording process, which features the use of numerous different instruments and recording techniques. With a new album on the way soon, you can expect the unexpected from the intense experience that is Phuture Memoriez.
