Brooklyn-based indie-rock outfit My Son The Doctor recently dropped their debut album, Glamours, a 10-track collection of songs sandwiched between slacker rock and pop-punk.

Recorded in North Carolina at Mitch Easter’s Fidelitorium and engineered by Jeremy Snyder, Glamours manifests a sound shaped in basements and applied in venues sharing the stage with bands like Gustaf, Bodega, and Teenage Halloween.

My Son The Doctor is made up of Brian Hemmert (vocals), Joel Kalow (guitar), Matt Nitzberg (bass), and John Mason (drums). Jeremy Snyder guests on Wurlitzer and piano.

A bit chaotic yet appealing, “Lawrence Bigando” opens the album. Vaguely reminiscent of Weezer, only more unruly, especially as the vocals shift from slacker tones to more frenetic timbres, the harmonics give off darting here and there sensations.

For some reason, “Pink Rabbit” summons up memories of Joe Walsh because of its raw, bendy guitars. Yet pop-punk elements infuse the song with almost discordant textures.

Highlighted by a shrill intro, “Moby Dick II” segues to a thick, dirty guitar, followed by a frantic layering effect topped by gang-like harmonies, rapid-fire drums, and ringing gongs. The thereabouts out-of-tune milieu and loose flow of the melody make the song a personal favorite.

Whereas “Drunk Kids” begins on a low-slung, plucking guitar and then escalates. Like the love child of The Offspring and Weezer, the tune blends pop-punk and slacker elements into a visceral sonic concoction dripping with gritty, gleaming surfaces accented by delightful oh-woo-hoo-hoo harmonies.

The garage-rock-like “Polypropylene” projects a deliciously dragging feel even though the rhythm pushes a bit. Bathed in dissonant guitar edges, Hemmert’s vocals hold the tune together with finessed yet organic phrasing and the tasty use of tonal inflections.

The debut album of My Son The Doctor, with its egghead lyrics and cultural references, takes indie-rock in a wonderfully innovative direction.
