Marten Borch Premieres His Reflective New Album ‘That Was Fun’
Singer-songwriter Marten Borch has been through a lot, and he wanted to share those thoughts in his brand new album ‘That Was Fun.’
Everyone racks up lots of wins and losses, and if you’re like Marten Borch, you’ll take the losses in stride and do something constructive with them. That’s what the singer-songwriter has done with his new record, That Was Fun. The eight-track record is a true statement from Borch of both where he is musically, but also where he is mentally and spiritually.
Beyond just the music, the album is an emotional, contemplative commentary on embracing the joys of life when they present themselves, confronting grief without inhibition, and showing some respect for the planet. In addition to his work as a musician, Borch is also a big climate activist. He is actively involved in environmental causes and the importance of our present and future. He is also an advocate for intentional communities, favouring the power of collective support over the isolation of the nuclear family.
Elaborating on the spiritual significance of That Was Fun, Borch tells us:
“The album is important for me to showcase my music as a solo artist. I initially intended to release it last year, but after my mom was diagnosed with terminal cancer, I put everything on hold. Now, it has become an ode to her, with two songs written specifically in her memory. The title, That Was Fun, comes from some of the last words she said to me.”
For Borch, composing That Was Fun was like organizing an entire spectrum of feelings and emotions. It’s not wholly any one thing; it’s a combination of sentiments and musings on life as it presents itself to you. It’s a blend of joy, grief, nostalgia, and resolve. He reflects a lot on the impermanence of life, but it’s also a call to action to get involved in the climate crisis. Borch likes to keep things both authentic and simple. These have been guiding principles for him throughout his songwriting career. He has a deep love of nature and humanity, and you can feel it in each track.
Borch wanted to use the platform of the album to showcase his skills as a solo artist. In an attempt to capture the truest feeling of real emotion, he combined the melodic finesse evident on the album with a rawer form of production. Everything was meant to preserve that raw emotion he was feeling when he was writing the record. For an artist who has a real appreciation for nature, it’s a very natural-sounding record. There is beauty in life and all of its varied moments, and Borch has accomplished creating a work that is able to show respect for those moments and bring them all together in one set of songs.
