Brooklyn indie pop band Little Slugger is back with the release of Rooftops, their first full-length album since 2019—and it was worth the wait. The group kicks off 2025 with 13 new tracks that are full of heart, grit, and memorable melodies. The front man of the group, Ben Chugg, says “It’s been quite the ride getting Rooftops out there, but it’s been worth every moment. [It has] a touch of twang, and a touch of punk—it’s a true reflection of our journey.”

The album opens with “Asleep By The Fire,” a dreamy track that sucks you in, setting the tone with the line: “I’m asleep by the fire. Waiting for you to come home.” It feels like a quiet night where you’re missing someone.

“. . . a touch of twang, and a touch of punk—it’s a true reflection of our journey.”

Roughly halfway through, the band gives us the title track “Rooftops.” This song brings an upbeat energy and signature feel. It’s emotional and raw. The song’s message seems to be about an emotional struggle. It depicts someone being on their roof looking at the world around them with a sense of powerlessness—like others got a head start in life, and they’re trying to catch
up. “Was your only crime / Being born to a losing side?”

The album closes with, “Happy F*cking People”—a track that showcases the emotions of being alone after a relationship ends and how in those moments of sadness, everyone around you seems to be better off. “You’ve been walking the streets by the park, but it’s easy to hide. Peering inside bodegas and restaurants passing you by. And they all look full of happy f*cking people.”

Little Slugger has grown a lot since their beginnings in Vermont ten years ago. This new album continues their progression, mixing in new instruments—like steel pans and clarinets—with their classic indie sound. Rooftops feels like a snapshot of life’s highs, lows, and everything in between.
