The last time we caught up with Lexytron, a lot in her life was changing. It was just over five years ago that we featured the premiere of the music video for the single “Blue” from her 2020 album Something Blue. She had just moved from London, England, to Auckland, New Zealand, seeking a much-needed change of scenery.

Her decision to relocate has proven to be one she’s pleased with, and after some time away, she’s back today with the premiere of her “Kiss Me Quick” music video. The song is the first single from her forthcoming studio album, Something New, which will be released via Persian Punk Records. She’s been in New Zealand for about five years now. The move coincided with the pandemic, which, in hindsight, wasn’t such a bad thing because it helped Lexytron take some time away from music to focus on her family. After giving birth to her daughter, she got back to songwriting and got down to recording that long-awaited sophomore album.

Discussing her new single, Lexytron tells us:

“The song is about a one-sided relationship and waking up to the realization that it’s time to walk away. An image that came to mind when writing the song was of an old friend, who attended a ‘music and movies’ themed party as ‘the morning after girl’ from all the romcoms by wearing just a baggy male shirt. I took the lyrics and chords to Mike and we experimented to create a dreamy soundscape. I like the tradition of marrying bittersweet subject matter with a more optimistic musical tone. It was recorded in our home studio in Auckland and mixed and mastered by London-based producer Marco Meloni, who worked on our debut album Something Blue.”

In reference to the video, she states:

“The video uses footage from Princess Nicotine, directed by J. Stuart Blackton. I like incorporating short films from a bygone era into my work because I’m passionate about cinema and that whole anachronistic pairing of two things from different worlds, kind of like how Baz Luhrmann sticks rap into Shakespeare, but I’m doing it with rock n’ roll!”

“Kiss Me Quick” basks in a vintage dream pop sound, with the singer-songwriter emphasizing both vulnerability and empowerment. Lexytron’s music is so reflective of her life journey. She’s happy to be back doing what she loves in a new era of both her life and her songwriting career.
