Tucson, Arizona band Birds and Arrows, fronted by the married couple Andrea and Pete Connolly, just released their latest single, “The Kite, Right Back to Me”—and it’s a vibe. With dreamy synths, expressive vocals, and a throwback 80s rock sound, the song feels like a late-night drive—nostalgic, moody, and kind of magical.

The couple behind the band have been making music together for 17 years. And their connection is apparent in this song, with tight-knit harmonies and authentic lyrical approach. In their words, “This song draws from our experience of being artists and musicians dedicated to living a creative lifestyle over the past 20 years. The song explores the complexity of relationships, the distance and closeness that can exist as part of a creative life and its highs and lows”.

Lyrically, the chorus seems to use the freeway as a metaphor. “The freeway screams into the night. Beckoning with its broken line. And with its distant call. Maybe once and for all. It’ll bring you. Right back to me.” It’s perhaps a call to run, but also the path back home. There’s a dash of ambiguity within the lyrics, leaving enough room for the listener to relate their own personal meanings.

Produced by Steven Tracy at Saint Cecelia Studios in Tucson, the song blends old-school influences with a modern sensibility in a way that works well for the group. And lines like “Even if you choose to live in transcendent flight, a tale of guilt when you’re the kite” leave a substantive mark.
