The Barlow Premiere High-Spirited Single “Roping The Wind”
Southern rock band The Barlow premiere the single “Roping The Wind” from their brand new album ‘High Spirits.’
Songs can be composed in many different ways, but bands like The Barlow have a straightforward process. Find the route to a great song and get out of the way when that song is coming to you. That’s a big part of the process that led to the writing and recording of their new album, High Spirits.
Today, the Colorado boys unearth one of those songs with the premiere of their new single “Roping The Wind.” This track is a special moment on the record, a song that combines the best aspects of Southern rock and traditional American country music. It’s an example of the approach at work that they employed with this record. The band, led by lead singer and guitarist Shea Boynton, wanted to write songs that would resonate with listeners, and they didn’t care how they got there. In this recording process, they made it a point of emphasis to be more open-minded when it came to different sounds and songwriting approaches.
Commenting on the song, Boynton states:
“‘Roping the Wind’ is a reflection on the cost of mistakes and the emptiness that lingers when there’s no going back. It’s an introspective look at the struggle to find redemption in a world that feels empty without the person you once held dear. I wanted to convey that redemption in the wake of addiction is possible, and it can come in the form of appreciating the simple things.”
High Spirits is the follow-up to The Barlow’s 2022 album, New Year, Old Me. Recorded in two different sessions in 2023 and 2024 at Evergroove Studio in Evergreen, Colorado, the record will be released on April 25th. The band members really applied themselves to these songs in a special sense, with a laser focus on the quality of the songs themselves. Throughout the whole process, they maintained an open mind. Rather than chase songs, in a sense, they let the songs come to them, just letting the chips fall where they may and going from there. There was maximum freedom to explore different sonic terrain which led to the final result of clean harmonies, catchy melodies, and a heartland country rock vibe.
While not an experimental record per se, High Spirits was born out of a lot of experimentation. It’s an approach that has The Barlow feeling refreshed, with a laid-back vibe that will surely connect with listeners in a direct and meaningful way.
