Rachel Therrien Premieres Stellar “Orun” Performance Video
Rachel Therrien is back with yet another new music video for “Orun” from her latest Lula World Records-released album ‘Mi Hogar II.’
While many musicians stick to an established canvas within which to work, Rachel Therrien takes a more adventurous approach. You can hear it in songs like “Orun” from her latest album, Mi Hogar II. Today marks the debut of the song’s accompanying performance video. Therrien leads the way with her standout trumpeting while being backed up by her multi-talented backing band. It’s obvious that the band has chemistry, with each member seamlessly playing off of one another. There’s an effortlessness to it, which is the true sign of a band that knows how to play together and understands how to improvise together. Within that spectrum, it’s a wonder to see how they play together. Despite the complexity of it all, it’s the look of a band with confidence and experience.
We have gotten to know Therrien quite well over the last couple of months through the premieres of some of her other songs and interviews we have conducted with her. It’s all come within the leadup to the release of Mi Hogar II. The album was released last week via Lula World Records. It’s a continuation of her well-regarded 2023 album Mi Hogar, a triumph of Latin jazz, Afro-Caribbean rhythms, and contemporary jazz fusion. The album is firmly rooted in Latin jazz tradition.
Commenting on the song, Therrien shares:
“This track is inspired by the fearless spirit of OKAN’s family and their young son, Orun. With profound Afro-Cuban roots and Yoruban influences, the song captures a sense of resilience, heritage, and love passed down through generations. The intricate percussion and melodic call-and-response between instruments create a deeply emotional yet uplifting atmosphere.”
It was recorded in New York, Toronto, and Montreal, with an all-world cast of players assembled to bring out the best in these compositions. Her roots and her community are very important to her, and Therrien tried to channel that into both Mi Hogar albums. With all of the contributors, it feels somewhat like a family affair with a comfortable approach to bringing out the best in the music. With Therrien leading the way, it’s like an all-for-one and one-for-all approach to musical composition.
