There’s something that the ’80s had that no other decade ever had and no future decade will have. Oh! has made it abundantly clear what their influences are and where they stand musically with their single “Alien.” The song, released via Iptamenos Discos, features vocals from London-based singer Alexander Price. Even though the ’80s are well behind us, Oh! has conjured up that spirit and creativity with this, their debut single, out now via Iptamenos Discos! It is reminiscent of the vocal style and the free-spiritedness of The B-52’s or Devo. With “Alien,” Price wanted the vocals to sound specific to the time period of the early 2000s when the electroclash scene was what was hot.

The song’s accompanying video clip also feels very retro, like the videos that were popular in the early MTV days. It’s compelling for all the right reasons, and obviously a little bit eccentric. That’s quite clear witnessing Price performing in a room packed full of female mannequins. Oh! wanted the video to stand out for its artistic merit which is why they worked on it with Berlin-based artist Reichhardt.

Discussing the song, the band states:

“‘Alien’ explores the human experience—falling for someone emotionally distant yet intellectually superior, knowing it’s doomed from the start. Inspired by 1960s B-movie aesthetics and the surreal experience of emerging from lockdown, the song captures that out-of-place, alien feeling. The music video brings this vision to life with boiler suits, mannequins, and the contrast between human and alien energy.”

Like so many other musical projects, Oh! took shape while Massimo Braghieri and Gianluca Pighi were stuck in lockdown. They started bouncing ideas off of each other which sparked a chemistry between them. Despite the retro sound of “Alien,” the track was recorded in the state-of-the-art Elfo Recording Studios in North Italy. The song is an ode to a human doomed by misaligned love for an extraterrestrial who is intellectually superior but emotionally inferior. For the type of synth-pop that Oh! is whipping up, what could be a better song topic than that?
