Close to Monday – ‘World Turtles’ [EP] [Album Review]
On ‘World Turtles,’ Close to Monday delivers sleek synth-pop beats brimming with dreamy vibes and dynamic, retro panache.

The European synth-pop duo Close to Monday recently released their EP, World Turtles, a five-track collection of sumptuous music about the exigency of ocean conservation.
The release of World Turtles corresponds with Earth Hour, which occurs on March 22, the worldwide moment acknowledging environmental issues, and World Water Day, on the same date. Close to Monday are working with the environmental organization iSea to protect the oceans of the world.
iSea’s Communication Officer, Anastasia Charitou, says, “Now more than ever, it is crucial for artists to seize the opportunity to promote environmental protection and inspire their audience to take action. After all, nature has always been a source of inspiration for art.”
The EP opens with the pulsating “Turtles,” reminiscent of ’70s Berlin discotheques blended with ’80s and ’90s synth-pop textures. There’s a hypnotic quality to the pressing rhythm and psychedelic-lite harmonic surfaces.
Highlights include “First Class,” darker and dreamier, riding a syncopated rhythm topped by Anne’s mesmerizing vocals – simultaneously sensuously beckoning and tinted with risky savors.
A personal favorite because of its gliding flow and potent throbbing rhythm, the retro-flavored “Flight” offers the sensation of physical and spiritual liberation, akin to defeating the pull of gravity and rising on ascending currents.
The last track, “Come Undone,” re-interprets Duran Duran’s hit song, merging shimmering, percolating colors with Anne’s evocative voice to produce longing feelings full of need and desire.
On World Turtles, Close to Monday delivers sleek synth-pop beats brimming with dreamy vibes and dynamic, retro panache.
