Occurrence Turn Negative into Positive on “Opportunity Window” Single [Premiere]
Electronic rock act Occurrence premiere their latest single “Opportunity Window” from their new album ‘Real Friend.’

Music is a lot of things, but one of its core characteristics, as Occurrence could tell you, is connection. That’s the focal point of the ensemble’s brand-new album, Real Friend. Today, they are pleased to share with you the album’s newest single, “Opportunity Window,” and its accompanying music/lyric video (Check out our premiere of the band’s previous single, “Feeding Time.” Simple yet effective, the clip features a one-angle, dead-center shot of frontwoman Cat Hollyer performing her vocals while the lyrics appear in front.
The song was primarily spearheaded by Ken Urban, who oversees a lot of the band’s electronics and production. It was inspired by some bad news he had received, which he felt reflected the sound and the mood of the beats he was tinkering with. When he played it for Hollyer, she took a different point of view. Rather than see the lowness in it, she viewed it the opposite way, and her lyrics emphasize the importance of trusting yourself and moving forward.
Commenting on the uniqueness of the album, Hollyer states:
“This is the first time we wrote about each other. I love that we deal with the concept of friendship since it is such a rich subject for songs.”
Along with singer Johnny Hager, this year marks the tenth anniversary since the formation of Occurrence. They formed in the Washington Heights neighbourhood of New York City, where they still remain. Real Friend is their fifth studio album with the title representing the core theme of the record. As the COVID pandemic was winding down, the band started to consider their own lives and what had changed. It’s likely the case for most people that they have fewer friends now than they did five years ago. The same goes for the members of Occurrence, who lost a lot of friends during this time.
Within those losses though, it reinforced the connection between Hollyer, Urban, and Hager. That connection seeped into their songwriting, with these songs focusing on the importance of their relationship with each other. They are also about the importance of their friendship with other people in their lives and what it means to have people close to you who care for you. There is no filter anywhere within these songs. It’s just three friends reflecting on the importance of each other, savouring what they have rather than brooding over what they don’t.
