Alcest, a post-black metal band from France, kicked off the first leg of their North American Tour last week at The Royale in Boston. The tour, named after their most recent album, Les Chants de L’Aurore, has 24 dates with shows across the United States and Canada.

The show began with the Icelandic trio Kaelan Mikla hitting the stage, followed by the Japanese group Mono. The crowd eagerly awaited Alcest’s arrival, and when they finally took the stage, the place was packed, and the energy was electric.

I really enjoyed Alcest’s stage setup and how they created a physical version of their album cover for Les Chants de L’Aurore. They had an illuminated moon with two golden birds on either side of it and varying displays of colour and light that added to the entire show experience. Through their haunting music, enchanting lights and intricate stage, they entirely transported the audience to what felt like another realm.

Overall, Alcest managed to create a show that was a beautiful escape from reality while simultaneously bringing deep emotions and intense feelings to the surface. I was both impressed and surprised by their performance.
