Social Creatures Premiere Their Road-Written EP ‘This Is Where the Love Lies’
Indie pop band Social Creatures are a motivated bunch and it shows in the premiere of their brand new EP ‘This Is Where the Love Lies.’

While writing on the road can be a tall task, it’s often the most effective way for newish bands like Social Creatures to flesh out new material. That’s exactly what they did while out on the road touring behind their 2022 self-titled debut album. The Brooklyn-based act apportioned whatever time available to write new songs together which offered them the opportunity to workshop songs in front of live audiences. In real-time, they were able to assess what resonated with the live crowds and what didn’t. For the parts that didn’t produce much of a response, the guys had the privilege of rewriting on the go.
The result of this hard work is This Is Where the Love Lies. The six-song EP is an extension of their self-titled debut, intermixing ’80s-era dance rock and modern alternative rock. Their debut record was defined by its analog synths, nostalgic riffs, and eccentric grooves. They built upon that foundation with the EP, some of which was written in the most unconventional of ways. For instance, “No Mas” was built upon an a cappella chant that appeared out of nowhere as the band was driving down the west coast. When they got home, they set it to chords, played with the recording speed, and voila, it was a song.
Expanding upon the background in which the album was written, the band offers:
“Right after we’d put our first album out and started touring the USA supporting it, we had a lineup change adding Jacob Ott as our bassist and Yann Palaric-Skinner on keys, percussion and backing vocals. We really enjoyed playing songs from the first record but also wanted to write and record songs the five of us, so this EP really was the music we made together while we were on the road, and just excited to be making music as a new group of guys.”
A quintet, Social Creatures features a talented cross-section of songwriters and instrumentalists. In addition to the aforementioned Ott and Palaric-Skinner, the band features Canadian vocalist Jono Robertson, guitarist Dan Lazari, and drummer John Patrick Roach. They have toured previously with Sam Roberts Band, They Might Be Giants, and The Wild Things. They are doing their best to be as relentless as possible as a band and as songwriters. With some live gigs coming up, they are already working hard on their sophomore LP. The band is excited to work these new songs out at these upcoming gigs and start the process all over again.
