Rachel Therrien Makes it Feel Like “Back Home” with Her New Music Video [Premiere]
Rachel Therrien gives us a taste of Latin jazz tradition with the premiere of the music video for her new single “Back Home.”
There’s a festive touch to what Rachel Therrien does as an artist, and it’s quite apparent in her new music video for “Back Home.” The song comes from the trumpeter, composer, and producer’s latest record, Mi Hogar II, set for release on March 7th. Therrien’s soulful trumpeting carries you through the composition, with “Back Home” specifically inspired by the uniqueness of New York’s Latin jazz traditions.
The video clip represents everything that is valuable about jazz: the spirit, liveliness, and the community that has always stood within the heart of the genre. Therrien wanted “Back Home” to embody that vibrant culture of the Latin jazz tradition while also acknowledging how it has changed over time. Its origins lay in New Orleans, but it was reimagined in New York and then more recently reinterpreted in Montreal. “Back Home” is meant to celebrate the ongoing evolution of this wonderful jazz subgenre.
Over the course of seven albums, the French-Canadian Therrien has established herself as one of jazz’s more diverse modern artists. She combines jazz traditions with Afro-Latin flavours and World Music. She has primarily spread her time as an artist between New York and Montreal. Since things calmed down with the pandemic, Therrien has been remarkably active, recording often and releasing three records with Mi Hogar II being the fourth.
As the title suggests, it’s a continuation of her Mi Hogar album, which came out in early 2023. The English translation of “Mi Hogar” is “my home,” obviously one of the key qualities to Therrien as a person and as an artist. Home and community are very important to her, and her music flows directly from those sources. Many of her most beloved collaborators contributed to these records as part of her Latin Jazz Project. Therrien feels like she has really hit her stride, and she is excited to bring to life a lot more of that Latin Jazz flavour and culture.
