I admit this one grew on me. “Warriors Without a Quest” does what I would consider key to a lot of good power metal: It does not take itself too seriously. And while I’m not here to review the music video, it does star a cat, so you should probably check it out. But regarding the chops of the song itself, this is fun power metal. The lyrics are grandiose, and Hans & Valter display their inspiration clearly: Gloryhammer, Twilight Force, and I can hear a hint of Manowar, too.

Nevertheless, the vibrant imagery and the song’s narration seal the deal. Here we have a warrior; what’s he to do? Let’s make an epic adventure song about what he’s looking to do. And then, wait, the plot happens! It’s go-time!

The song accelerates like my heartbeat when I listen to this song, matching the varying vocal tones to emotional, optimistic instrumentals. The theme itself resonates, I’d say, with a lot of listeners, but it is also an excellent deconstruction of a lot of D&D-style classics of “here’s the dragon, here’s the magic sword, maybe put something about a hot princess in the chorus.”

It’s a little subversive, and its sheer vocal enthusiasm makes it immensely enjoyable, half ironically, half unironically; power metal is best when it’s camp, and the band leans into it well.

On the other hand, the instrumentals are nothing to write home about. You get the genre’s standard electric guitar/drums/synth characteristic, but I’m not about to write complaints, either. The heavy strum and triumphal synths back the sung narration reliably, and the jingling high notes are used strategically. This is the best thing I can say about a keyboard’s almost glockenspiel sound in metal. But I am eager to be proven wrong if Hans & Valter keep this technique up.

This solid power metal is a welcome addition to the genre. We aren’t exactly breaking new ground here, but Hans & Valter explore old territory creatively.
