In hearing the new record from Deep Blue Something, you’re just reminded of the fact that there was something about ’90s indie rock that just hits differently. You can hear every bit of that influence in the band’s new single “Will You Wait.” It’s from the band’s latest record, Lunar Phase, which they are gearing up to release this April via Flatiron Recordings.

Deep Blue Something is, of course, best known for their 1995 international hit “Breakfast at Tiffany’s.” What “Will You Wait” demonstrates is that the band has remained true to their roots and what’s guided them through to this day. The song is as radio-friendly as anything you’ll hear, with indie rock charm and the same feel-good melodies that propelled the band’s popularity in the mid-1990s.

Discussing the origins of “Will You Wait,” bassist and singer Todd Pipes comments:

“‘Will You Wait’ is based on a conversation I heard between a couple of college guys at a coffee shop. Apparently, a girl had given a late-night, and lengthy ultimatum to a boy, and the best response he could come up with was that he just needed time to ‘work on himself,’ and if she could just back off a little, he’d be be in a better place to assess their relationship by the end of summer. The guy listening to the story then posed the same question that I had formulated in my own head: ‘What are you gonna do when summer is over?’ The first boy responded with, ‘There’s always another summer…’ They both agreed that it was a solid plan. The song just wrote itself.”

The driving force behind Deep Blue Something remains the Pipes brothers, who formed the band in Denton, Texas, in 1993. They released their debut album, 11th Song, the same year. That was followed by followed by Home in 1995, Byzantium in 1998, and Deep Blue Something in 2000. It was a very productive period for the band that helped them establish a faithful fanbase that has stuck with them to this day.

Rather than just tour as a legacy act, the band is taking this latest go around very seriously. It was important to them to release new music and not just expect fans to show up for “the hits.” Lunar Phase is not a concept album, but it was written and recorded with a clear focus. They wanted to record it within the mindset of it being the early 1990s when jangly underground guitar bands were highly sought after. This is the era which really solidified the band’s sound. So, it is only natural that they want to pay tribute to it. It’ll be the follow-up to their 2020 EP Locust House, which was well-received by their fanbase. Whether you grew up with the band or you are just discovering them now, this is a timeless, uncomplicated indie guitar pop that easily resonates with any fan of any generation.
