Meet Tanerélle! In the spirit of “C’est la V13,” 35mm film captured these images. Film Forward is the direction that analog images take your mind in the new post-pandemic age of live music. Photographers are in the pit where nothing stands between us and the artists onstage for only the first three songs. Shooting film for kinetic action in low light is unforgiving and demands my complete concentration. I’m forced to stay present of mind for an irreplaceable moment that will be gone in the blink of an eye.

Tanerélle was hot off of opening Femme It Forward’s third annual Give Her FlowHERS Gala when she arrived in Dallas to begin her headline tour at the House of Blues Cambridge Room. The sultry performer danced hypnotically as if in zero gravity and lived up to her alias, Mama Saturn (also the name of the record label she founded.) Tanerélle’s deep catalogue of sexy slow jams delivered by her smoky chest voice was intimate and otherworldly all at once. Dallas fans were packed wall to wall on a Monday night to be among the first in North America to experience “The Electric Honey Tour” live.
This show was my chance to see a shapeshifter in her original form. I first became aware of Tanerélle as a singer-songwriter before I discovered that she’s also a film composer, Playboy Playmate, and space-age style icon. I had the rare fortune to see the legendary Grace Jones perform recently, and a similar alien goddess presence radiated from Tanerélle on stage more than any other young performer that I’ve seen in recent memory. Tanerélle’s hips snaked as her voice glided over avant-garde electronic percussion, and the audience shared a collective vision of soul music’s future state in all its sensual glory and dripping with electric honey.
