Quick & Dirty: Pablo Starr Answers Random Geeky Questions
Pablo Starr unabashedly shares personal experiences in his unabashed geeky answers to random quick and dirty questions.
Pablo Starr, an electronic music producer and indie artist, is no stranger to creative reinvention. With his latest single, “Story of Life (Sorrow of Love, Joy of Music),” Starr weaves together emotive storytelling and lush electronic production, offering a poignant exploration of love’s duality. Known for his diverse career — from shaping the indie music scenes of Silver Lake and New York City to founding the global fashion platform Fashion Week Online — Starr’s artistic evolution continues to captivate audiences. This track marks the beginning of a new chapter, blending the introspective warmth of bossa nova and jazz standards with the innovative edge of modern electronic music.
The single captures the bittersweet beauty of love and loss, reflecting Starr’s unique ability to channel personal experiences into universal emotions. “I wanted Story of Life to encapsulate the duality of warmth and ache — which are such natural parts of life,” Starr explains. “It’s a meditation on how memories stay with us, like flickers of light we can revisit anytime.”
Entirely self-produced in his Paris studio, the track is a testament to his artistic independence and versatility, joining his recent releases like Regular Losers and Heart Under Glass as part of his upcoming self-titled project.
Beyond music, Starr’s creative pursuits extend into literature and visual art, with the Cyberpink® graphic novel and musical project building momentum ahead of a major Kickstarter launch. Set against a futuristic backdrop, Cyberpink® explores themes of resilience and identity through the lens of an all-girl band, showcasing Starr’s multidisciplinary approach to storytelling. With his hands in so many creative ventures, Starr’s latest work reaffirms his commitment to exploring life’s intricacies, making him an artist whose journey is as compelling as the art itself. Making it more exciting, Pablo Starr sat down with us for a fun and random interview, allowing us to get to know him on a personal level.
What do you think is your greatest accomplishment?
Pablo Starr: “The experience of some super-happy relationships, and taking care of my former cat, and now my dog Ava Starr.
“I think everything passes away, but happy moments, especially shared (ones), are things we get to keep. Having said that, I’m working more and more on being happy without anyone else having to be part of the equation (except Ava or animals). So it’s odd to be doing music again, which is so much part of the whole ‘look at me’ culture we live in.
“One of the names I was thinking about for the forthcoming album was A Life With No One Watching.
“I wonder if it’s possible. To have a truly happy life where you’re completely divorced from the idea of other people looking in on it. I know people have done it in the past. But can it be done today? Is it healthy? I’m so curious. I often think about moving to a farm, and no one ever sees or hears from me again, and it’s so wonderful to be there with ducks and chickens and a moonlight path, and a fence, and that’s it.”
What’s something you know isn’t real but wish existed?
“The Cyberpink® universe (obvious plug for my upcoming graphic novel Kickstarter campaign), and Star Trek!
“Star Trek is like the perfect combination of space adventure and being in a luxury five-star hotel. As far as I’m concerned, no better reality is possible.”
What’s the most random fact you know?
“Pataphysics is the science of that which exists beyond metaphysics.”
“It’s a humorous concept, because what can be said to lie beyond ‘that-which-lies-beyond?’ But I also think it’s interesting, because what if pataphysics is actually ‘whole reality?’ In other words, what if it’s the top view of everything, encompassing both the seen and unseen, and both the what and why of reality? The idea of reality itself is such a fascinating concept. Let’s say we discover the entire universe is just the science experiment of some incredible, vast life form. What universe does it live in? Who created that?
“The question just goes on and on and on.”
Must-have non-musical items when you’re on tour?
“Ava, an eye mask, ear plugs, lip balm. And lots of coffee.”
If you could hang out with a famous person (dead or alive) for one day, who would it be?
“Albert Einstein! Because I have a bunch of random questions like:
– ‘Does an empty universe experience time?’
– ‘Does light experience the beginning and end of the universe simultaneously? If so, can we use light to time travel?’
– ‘Is the phenomenon of time dilation somehow related to the fact that moving faster means it takes less time to reach a certain point or is that a coincidence?’
“To be honest, I’ve asked AI these questions, and I didn’t completely understand the answers. So probably hanging out with Einstein wouldn’t help. I wish I knew physics! Maybe when I move to the farm. I just don’t want to be one of those crazy people sitting on a farm talking to themselves and thinking they understand the universe when really they’ve just gone slowly insane. That wouldn’t be good.”
You just won a game show, and your prize is a dream vacation! Where are you headed?
“I’ve already been on so many amazing trips! The top were definitely on safari in the Maasai Mara in Kenya and Bora Bora. The weird thing is, I’m getting a little bored of travelling. I feel like it’s all kind of the same thing. I really want to go to another planet or the future! And I think the most interesting part of the future isn’t the technology actually, it’s the culture. How will people think in the future? What things that we take for granted will be completely alien to their psychology? Will people still use social media, or will they be over it and on something else?
“I often wonder what Mozart would think of John Coltrane. What will the music sound like in 200 years? I have to know!”
If you could have dinner with any musician (dead or alive), who would it be?
“Alive, Paul McCartney. Dead, Jimi Hendrix!”
Favourite childhood musical memory?
“At seven, hearing mom’s clock playing ‘Westminster Chimes’ and feeling full of warm happiness and drawing a smiley face. Or on a road trip with my dad and him saying ‘let’s sing to make the sun come up,’ like in the movie Black Orpheus.”
