When you listen to artists like Nix Correa, you can’t help but feel self-empowered. It’s in the sound, it’s in the lyrics, and it’s in the overall vibe. There are vibes a plenty in the singer-songwriter’s recent single “Bring Paul Down.” Correa also released an accompanying music video for the song last month, a nice complementary piece to a very powerful song. “Bring Paul Down” is focused on the complicated web of love and its intersection with mental health and self-preservation. More specifically, the song is about the intense emotions associated with being in a relationship with a person who has borderline personality disorder (BPD). As hard as it is for your partner who has the condition, the situation can’t help but take an emotional toll on you.

The music video for “Bring Paul Down” is meant to emphasize the emotions at play of a woman breaking free of a toxic relationship. She looks through an old box of memories of better days gone by. As she does, she realizes that to move on, she has to let go of the past. Finally, she decides it’s best to burn the box, representing that she is truly ready to move forward and do what’s best for herself.

Based in Toronto, Correa is heavily influenced by both modern pop and R&B and the hits from the 1990s. She grew up on ’90s pop divas but was also exposed to the old-style pop crooners of the mid-20th century. This combination of influences is what helps make her such a likable artist to such a wide-ranging audience.

In light of the release of “Bring Paul Down,” Nix Correa joins us today for her Top 10 Tips for Surviving a Toxic Relationship.

1. Go to Therapy

“Seriously. As much as you think binge-watching Love is Blind with your gals is enough… it’s not. But definitely do that, too. With wine. It adds a nice touch.”

2. Move Your Body

“Working out boosts your mental strength, which you’ll need when you’re dealing with mixed signals and emotional rollercoasters. Plus, it’s a great way to physically, emotionally, and mentally reclaim your sense of self.”

3. Listen to Nix Correa

“I’m totally being cheeky with a shameless plug, but do crank up your favourite music. Music can be grounding and healing when things feel like they’re spinning out of control. So *obviously* listen to my new single, ‘Bring Paul Down’ but also, any song or artist that resonates with you — let their lyrics lift you up. A personal favourite of mine, when I am feeling low, is ‘The Voice Within’ by Christina Aguilera.”

4. Journal It Out

“Write down your feelings without any filter. Journaling can help you process your thoughts and see things more clearly when your mind’s in a fog. It’s a safe place to vent and let go. This is how most of my songs start out.”

5. Lean on Your Community

“Reach out to local resources or a trusted circle for help. You don’t have to go through this alone. Talking to someone who knows the right resources can be the first step to finding support.”

6. Know Your Worth

“No man is worth the price of your mascara, and you are priceless!! So, don’t let anyone make you feel like you need to ‘fix’ yourself. You deserve someone who knows your value as much as you do.”

7. Declutter Your Space

“Get rid of anything that reminds you of them or brings negative energy. A fresh, clean space can be a huge boost when you’re trying to clear your mind and heart.”

8. Rewrite the Rules for Self-Love

“Pamper yourself, take yourself on a date, try new hobbies, and rebuild your relationship with yourself.”

9. Surround Yourself with Positivity

“Whether it’s a podcast, a new book, or spending time with uplifting friends, let positive vibes flow into your life.”

10. Call Your Mom❤️

“Sometimes, mom’s voice is all you need to feel grounded, loved, and supported—she’s got your back, no questions asked.”
