Indie pop act girl in red stopped by Indianapolis’ Egyptian Room at Old National Center for a night of fun, friendship, and inclusiveness.
Earlier this month, the 14-stop “I have to see you again” tour by Norwegian singer-songwriter girl in red, formerly known as Marie Ringheim, sold out the 2,000-capacity Egyptian Room at Old National Center in Indianapolis. Marie is, in my opinion, one of the most significant LGBTQ+ musicians of the decade; thus, this was a night for the girls, gays, and theys. When multiple Chappell Roan songs were included in the pre-show setlist, the sardine-tight crowd was excited, but nothing topped the cries when Girl In Red walked on stage.
Ringheim, a 25-year-old singer and songwriter, initially aspired to become a teacher. She gained fame with her debut album If I Could Make It Go Quiet, and later released I’m Doing It Again Baby! with Columbia Records. She has sold over five million certified digital copies in the U.S. and received the Telenor Culture Prize in 2022. Ringheim’s music explores themes such as romance, heartbreak, mental illness, and queer experiences, with her noting Taylor Swift as a significant influence.
The set began with the energetic title track from her latest album, DOING IT AGAIN BABY, an alternative rock anthem that captivated with its catchy chorus. The singer’s performance of “girls,” a song about accepting sexuality and the challenges of being a woman who loves women, elicited emotional responses from the audience. Marie concluded the night by performing “i wanna be your girlfriend,” which has amassed over 500 million streams since its release, while crowd surfing.
I went into this event knowing a few parts of a few songs by girl in red, and I left with an obsession with many of them. I highly suggest spending your time at one of her shows if you are ever given the opportunity. The fan base is so kind, compassionate, and welcoming!
