As she approaches every new artistic challenge, Andrea Magee always approaches it with an open mind and an open heart. Love, honesty, and authenticity have, right from the start, been the driving force behind her songwriting. It was the case with “Belfast Girl” (which we premiered), an homage to her homeland, and it’s the case again with her latest single “Chase The River.” The video for the latter is as free-spirited as we would expect from Magee. It features her performing her bodhran in a backyard of plants, trees, and flowers. The song represents something a bit new from the singer-songwriter, as Magee is the only musician featured on the recording. It’s just her, her bodhran, bell drum, and singing bowls.
Expanding on the meaning of the song, Magee states:
“This song is an exploration of love and connection, created in a space of honesty and vulnerability. By recording it entirely on my own, I’ve been able to dive deep into my artistry, using just my bodhran, bell drum, singing bowls, and voice. My hope is that listeners will feel the genuine emotions behind each note and lyric, experiencing a sense of hope and warmth as they connect with the music.”
With every new project, Magee is intently focused on not repeating herself. This year marks a decade since she left her homeland of Belfast to pursue her dream of becoming a musician in the United States. Since then, she has etched out her own place as an artist and an activist. Magee is the founder of Music Helps, a non-profit that provides music workshops for children at Helping Hand Home for Children in her home city of Austin, Texas. These workshops connect local artists with at-risk youth to promote connection, creativity, and emotional enhancement. It not only helps provide an outlet for children, but it also connects local musicians with employment.
Related to her charitable work, Magee is also the festival director for She Rises Fest. This is an annual festival meant to celebrate women in music and the arts. It has helped really promote the value of gender equality in the music industry. Outside of her community work, Magee is currently preparing to record her next album at Arlyn Studios in Austin. Whichever way the album turns out, you know it will be unique and come straight from the heart.
