Wons Phreely +theHorses Premiere Their Groovy “The Faithful Heart” Music Video
Indie band Wons Phreely+theHorses pulled out all of the stops for their one-shot choreographed dance music video for “The Faithful Heart.”
When it comes to music videos, there’s no half-stepping it for Wons Phreely+theHorses, literally. You’ll see what we mean in their new music video for “The Faithful Heart.” A one-shot choreographed dance; lots of thought and creativity went into the concept behind this clip.
In their time together, band leader Wons (Justin Wonsly) has become known for his innovative, out-of-the-ordinary music videos. Wons presented the concept of the video to himself as a challenge. He admittedly can’t dance very well, but recalling an old quote from Bob Dylan where he said, “I think of myself as a song and dance man,” Wons felt inspired. He began to think of it as a challenge that he was determined to take on and succeed at.
Providing some background on the idea behind the video, Wons comments:
“When I wrote this song, I was nearing what I thought would be the end of writing my debut full-length album, which is coming out next year (2025). I’ve put out EPs and singles before, but this will be our first full record, so I found myself reflecting on how to describe its themes. The answer came to me in a rush: ‘restless nights of teenage lust, racing beat-up cars in parking lots, longing to find a place we can call our own—when you’re young, you must run, but when we’re old, could you hold me?’ I loved how it sounded, and those words ended up becoming the opening lyrics of another song on the album, ‘The Faithful Heart.
“And then when it came time to make a music video, I thought about my favourites, and it’s hard to think of a better music video than the choreographed dancing on treadmills music video by OK Go. So that idea of learning a group dance and performing it in one shot became the inspiration for this video.”
A lot of scouting went into finding the ideal location to shoot “The Faithful Heart.” This presented a host of challenges, most notably that in and around Los Angeles, it cost a fortune to shoot anything anywhere. After a long search, the band landed on a laundromat as the ideal backdrop for the dance. They did not receive official permission to shoot there but were able to pull it off.
Months were spent by the members of Wons Phreely+theHorses coming up with the most inventive dance steps and routines. With writing and recording more natural to them than dancing, they, fortunately, were lent a hand by some dance choreography friends. The most significant challenge of the video shoot was actually just pulling it off. Judging by the results, they pulled it off better than they could have imagined with a video that is significant for so many reasons.
