Indie-folk singer-songwriter Steve Dennis returns with his new single, “Annie,” a warm and reflective track that delves into love, missed connections, and second chances. Produced by Jamie Mefford, known for his work with Gregory Alan Isakov, “Annie” fuses Steve’s folk roots with influences from artists like Jack Johnson. Inspired by a real-life encounter, the song almost didn’t make it to release. “I almost threw this song out,” Steve admits. “But after playing it a few times, it became my most requested song. I’m glad I stuck with it.”

The story behind “Annie” unfolds from a spontaneous moment, sparked when Steve felt an instant connection with a checkout girl he encountered during a routine stop at a market. Initially too shy to act, he ultimately turned his car around to take a chance, capturing the thrill of love at first sight and the courage to act on it. Steve’s heartfelt storytelling and acoustic warmth will resonate with fans of artists like John Mayer, drawing listeners into his nostalgic yet fresh folk sound. Originally from Cape Ann, Massachusetts, Steve has performed extensively across New England and beyond, even entertaining international audiences with Royal Caribbean. His collaborations with top-tier producers and mastering engineers have refined his sound, and with new projects on the horizon, Steve Dennis’ fans must stay tuned for the upcoming sensations.

On the road to music success, Steve Dennis sat down with V13 for a short yet genuine interview, leaving a short message to his fans.

Which act would you want to tour with?

Steve Dennis: “Ha! Gregory Alan Isakov, Jack Johnson, Jackson Browne, and John Mayer. The list goes on. Love those guys.”

What’s the best criticism you’ve ever received about your music or performance?

“I think it was from myself. I had been trying to write and perform like the artists I’ve looked up to instead of writing and performing like myself. I came to that realization and music changed for me. I grew a whole new love for every part of it, and people started listening.”

What do you like most about playing music?

“I consider myself to be an introvert, but there’s really nothing like performing for people and where it brings me. The opportunity to express myself through songs I’ve written brings me such a high.”

Do you ever get stage fright? What’s your solution for it?

“Sometimes. Nerves are good, in my opinion. Might sound funny, but sometimes when the nerves get super high, I just think about how Dave Matthews doesn’t give a damn is himself every second he’s onstage.”

What are you still trying to figure out?

“Well, just trying to get more ears on my music. I don’t think I’ll be satisfied until my music is selling out venues or opening for some bigger names.”

Do you have anything you’d like to tell any fans reading right now?

“Thanks, and I love ya! :)”

When you write, do you do so with the live setting in mind, or do you write a song just for the song’s sake?

“I’ve just recently started writing for the record version. I was always set on the idea that the live version should sound like the record; but I’m a songwriter, so I don’t always have a full band backing me. And I kind of dig that the live experience will be something new and sometimes raw.”

What has been the most memorable moment of your career so far?

“I’d have to say opening for Ryan Montbleau at the Music Hall in Portsmouth, NH. His fans were so receptive to my music, and that moment really left me craving more.”
