To say that Rachel Kane’s new single “Follow You Down” comes from a special place would be an understatement. The song is a collaboration between Kane and her son Beatox, a songwriter and producer in his own right. Today, we help share the Winnipeg singer-songwriter’s new music video for the song, also produced by Beatox. The visuals are somewhat ambiguous and left open for interpretation by the viewing audience. The silhouettes featured in the video are meant to represent a mother caring for her children through the trials and tribulations of life. She guides them as they grow up, become adults, and start their own families. The grey imagery in the video is meant to represent the heavy emotional tone evident in Kane’s new record, Holler at the Wind.

Discussing the song, Kane states:

“As a mother, I wanted to capture the complex emotions of watching my children grow up and become independent. It’s bittersweet; there’s pride but also a longing to hold on. I worked hard on the guitar arrangement and technically speaking, it’s one of my favourites. The song reminds me of my daughter’s departure from home. Writing it allowed me to channel that ache into something healing, and I hope that anyone who has felt a similar kind of loss can find comfort in the music.”

Commenting on the song’s production and working with his mother, Beatox says:

“‘Follow You Down’ was special for me because it was the first time I experimented with ‘foley’ sounds in music, like the wind effect I did with my mouth, and it was one of the first tunes we considered for the album. Working with my mom on something so personal and raw was intense and sometimes tough, but it was also deeply rewarding. Seeing her resilience while making this album inspired me, and creating this together felt like a healing journey for both of us.”

Beatox (whose music video for “Been a Long Timewe premiered earlier this year) served as the producer for the entirety of his mother’s new record. Holler at the Wind is set for release on March 14th via Beatox’s own Moonlite Media label, a true multigenerational artistic effort. This will mark Rachel Kane’s first new album in 20 years, a portrait of an artist coming to terms with growing older and experiencing new things. Despite the two decades since the release of 2005’s Unravelling, Kane never did stop playing music. She remained invested in practicing frequently and also writing songs along the way. A collection of some older and some newer tracks, Kane decided to release the album partially thanks to much encouragement from her family.

Many of the songs on Holler at the Wind detail the freedom and loneliness that accompanies being middle-aged. It’s a disarming release with Kane showing no fear in laying all of her thoughts and emotions on the line. The album demonstrates that despite her layoff, she still has a lot left to say. Having the opportunity to work with her son has made this a very special time in Kane’s career. She’d be only so glad to have you share in this journey and experience along with her.
