Nobu Woods – “SPLIT” [Song Review]
Moody and subliminally seductive, with “SPLIT,” Nobu Woods parades not only his plush vocal talent but his sublime production expertise.
Alt-R&B artist Nobu Woods recently released his new single/visualizer, “SPLIT,” an appetizer for his upcoming mixtape, UNTL, set for release on November 1.
An up-tempo, supple banger, “SPLIT” conveys the angst of breaking up while simultaneously inviting listeners to get up and move to the groove.
Born in Jamaica, Queens, Woods attended school in Corona. Between hanging out with his cousins at home and being introduced to music production at the house, Woods grew up in two communities with different rules, music, and culture, all of which informed his style.
Talking about his music, Woods says, “I just follow what I hear in my head. I want my music to be memorable. I do that by building songs around moments from my life.”
“SPLIT” rolls out on emerging tones riding a thumping kick drum as Woods’ evocative, velvety vocals give the lyrics textures at once soft, smooth, and tender. There’s a polished silkiness to Woods’ vocals that allures and then ensnares listeners because of its elegant grace and satiny flow.
Oozing, glowing, gossamer synths infuse the melody with trembling surfaces – a low-slung flair held under careful control, yet rather than suppressing the mood of the song; it adds easy emphasis.
Moody and subliminally seductive, with “SPLIT,” Nobu Woods parades not only his plush vocal talent but his sublime production expertise.
