Manuel Barbará Ups the Ante with His “Whisper in a Storm” Lyric Video [Premiere]
Heavy metal guitarist and composer Manuel Barbará premieres the video for his new song “Whisper in a Storm,” featuring Thalia Tymowski.
Although it may seem pretty typical on the surface, when you scratch beyond the surface you’ll find that Manuel Barbará is more a composer than he is a traditional heavy metal artist. There is so much to immerse yourself within on the composer and guitarist’s new EP Whisper in a Storm.
Today marks the debut of the video for the title track, the most traditional song of the four you’ll find on the EP. When we say traditional, we mean that it is the most “typical” track featuring a verse-chorus-verse structure. But there’s also much more to it than that when you really engage with the song. It contains unusual expanding and contracting rhythms and a giant stack of guitars. The final bridge transitions into not one but two melodic guitar solos and then, of course, a final crushing riff.
Telling us more about the song and its inspirations, Barbará states:
“‘Whisper in a Storm’ is the first song I have ever done with vocals. The lyrics are inspired by Blade Runner, one of my favourite movies, in particular the character of Roy Batty. I have always found Roy’s struggle to define humanity and come to grips with his own mortality deeply compelling. The song features vocalist Thalia Tymowski, who I have wanted to collaborate with on original music for a long time, and guitarist Millisa Henderson, who provided a wonderfully melodic guitar solo that leads into the finale of the song.”
Whisper in a Storm acts as the follow-up to Barbará’s 2021 debut album Moonrise. For this EP, Barbará really let his creative inclinations run free. He designed it to be a strange, adventurous, and well-crafted collection of songs meant to challenge you. It is filled with a lot of spacey ambiance and it certainly features a very experimental side. That’s where the composer part of Barbará’s musical personality comes in.
As a musician, Manuel Barbará combines the aggression and technical prowess of metal’s great guitarists with the formal, polished musical concepts of the great composers of the 19th and 20th centuries. He trained formally in guitar and composition at the prestigious Berklee College of Music. He aims to bring his love of modern classical music and progressive rock together under one roof. Barbará views Whisper in a Storm as the four best tracks he has ever concocted. He is looking forward to using this EP as a springboard towards even more eclectic and challenging compositions where metal and classical music can thrive together in harmony.
