JJ Wilde Sets Montreal’s Le Studio TD Ablaze with Her Voice [Photos]
As part of her “All My Vices” tour, JJ Wilde brought her standout musicianship and voice to Le Studio TD in Montreal for a terrific evening.
On a cold, windy November evening, the thing you want to find the most is a source of warmth. Something to stoke the embers and help shake off the Autumn blahs. As humans, we’re drawn to heat. On this evening, there was no hotter event to be found than down at Le Studio TD. JJ Wilde was in town as part of her “All My Vices” tour, and her voice was about to light a fire in us all.
This tour is in support of Wilde’s second full-length album, Vices, which was released back in September. The album is another example of her strong songwriting and spectacular voice. Raspy and raw, JJ Wilde’s voice is her secret weapon. Though by now, it really shouldn’t be a secret at all. Powerful enough to pin you to the back wall of the building while also being soft and soulful, inviting you and drawing you closer. She made the decision to go all in on her music career six years ago, and we’re all the better for it.
Opening the show was a pair of soulful young songstresses from Vancouver. Twin sisters Breanne and Alana have followed the path set by their musical parents. They describe their sound as being folk-pop with the occasional Celtic twist, a mix that they have perfected. It was their first visit to Montreal, a city that they said they couldn’t wait to visit. After listening to some small talk amongst the crowd, nobody seemed very familiar with them before they hit the stage, but they had made a room full of new friends and fans by the time the final note had been played.
Their most recent album, I Might Start Smoking, was released last year and it is full of youthful experience and life. Truthful and real, the songs could double as diary entries. The authenticity in their songs and the honesty of their performance has won Fionn a great deal of followers. Though not one of their own, their cover of The Cranberries’ hit song “Dreams” shows off their strengths. Four minutes of terrific musicianship and melodic vocals. This was a great discovery, and I can’t wait to hear more.
Back in 2019, JJ Wilde was that same discovery. Hearing her song “The Rush” on the radio is a powerful experience, but it pales in comparison to hearing it and her other songs live. Her voice drew me in and, to this day, keeps pulling me back to her songs. JJ Wilde’s ever-expanding catalogue of great songs, combined with top-level live performances, brought me and a room full of others out on a cold November night. We were searching for a little warmth, and JJ Wilde set the room ablaze. Her flame will not be dying anytime soon.
The “All My Vices” tour continues through the end of the month. This tour may be almost over, but there will certainly be others down the road. Be sure to be there next time JJ Wilde visits your town.
