Whenever Eliza and the Organix release a new song, you just know there’s going to be an air of fun to it. They’ve done it again with their latest single “All Hail (S.O.S.).” As a band, they have an interesting touch when it comes to their songwriting.

If you listen closely to the lyrics, the song actually deals with some more serious topics like the need to not just be good to others but to be good to yourself. But it’s presented in a playful manner which is consistent with the band’s commitment to never taking themselves too seriously. Deep grooves, quirky energy, and punk rock attitude are the defining characteristics of the band. And they are all quite recognizable in “All Hail (S.O.S.).”

Discussing the song and its dynamics, band leader Eliza Waldman tells us:

“‘All Hail (S.O.S.)’ is a song about the quest to love yourself, accept yourself and let go of the need to be perfect. It truly was written as a song about self-love. Another aspect of the song, however, is poking fun at narcissistic tendencies in American culture and internet culture and this grandiose need to be superior to make yourself feel ok, and it has come out at a time when that feels very topical in terms of American politics.

“The cover art is a picture of me in a crown, and it’s a reference to a line from the song, the ‘queen of the shit show’ who is going to save us all. We don’t need to set ourselves up as queens, kings, or saviours to have value, and there is a lot of damage that can be done by putting ourselves or others in that role.”

Almost a year ago to the day, we premiered Eliza and the Organix’s Christmas-themed single “Xmas In Hell.” Their rise has been a steady ascent ever since they formed as a college rock act in 2011. A group of music nerds in the jazz program at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York, they decided to form a band, but one that would be a lot different than their studies.

Sound and style have never been that important to Waldman and her bandmates. It’s always been more about spirit and enthusiasm, energy for their craft. The release of “All Hail (S.O.S.)” comes as a lead into a new album that the band hopes to be releasing in the new year. Whatever the results, you know that the record will have that definitive Eliza and the Organix buoyancy and character.
