Michael Wilson’s latest poem, “Autumn And its Successor,” personifies the seasons. It reluctantly offers a glum welcome to the end of another cycle and the prolonged cold, darkness, and isolation it brings. Check out his previous poem, “The Artist’s Elegy.”

The wind and the trees and the autumn leaves, the gentle caress of the evening breeze.

The Matron of Seasons calms her lover before leaves the year to come another.

As he doth slumber, so doth summer; gone is warmth, angry and brash.

Asleep he has fallen, soon as will she.

Once this has passed, alone will we be.

Despite hope asunder, we welcome the last:

“Come hither, winter, season of sorrow,

for autumn, at last, has fully passed.”
