There’s lots that’s left open to interpretation in Aline’s étoile magique’s new single “Aliens are Pieces of Wind” and its accompanying music video. Led by violinist Aline Homzy, she recently emerged with a new ensemble and a new musical direction.

The music video for the song goes beyond what you’d expect of a jazz artist. It features both performative elements and some fabulous shots of Homzy masterfully fiddling her violin. Combined together, the song and the video really stand tall, illustrating that you don’t need lyrics and hooks to tell a compelling story.

Elaborating on the message behind the song, Homzy tells us:

“‘Aliens are Pieces of Wind’ is an evocative sonic narrative with lush soundscapes and a powerful metaphor. On the surface, its title may lead us into thinking about the physicality of what aliens might be; are they shapeless, figures beyond the possibilities of our imagination, or do they truly possess faces as depicted in the media?

“The deeper message is a definitive call to action for humanity: we must be protectors of the environment, pivoting away from our catastrophic disregard for its vitality, and leaving it for future generations, enlivened. Without changing course, we will become aliens to our story, losing the ground which unites us.”

As she has indicated, Homzy is able to say a lot without saying anything at all. Originally from Montreal, Homzy has put together an all-star lineup for Aline’s étoile magique. An eclectic ensemble, the group mainly draws on their jazz, folk, and classical backgrounds.

Joining Aline is a group of highly acclaimed Toronto area jazz artists, including vibraphonist Michael Davidson, drummer Marito Marques, bassist Dan Fortin, and guitarist Thom Gill. Each musician comes with their own musical eccentricities. They released their debut album, éclipse, last year via Elastic Recordings. Its release brought with it high praise for its elegance and originality. Aline and her bandmates are able to go beyond the basic and really create a mood and a culture all with just the use of their instruments.
