It’s been a while since we’ve heard this side of ZZ Ward. On her new EP, Mother, the singer-songwriter sheds the pop polish of her previous releases in favour of something far rawer, diving deep into the gritty blues influences that first inspired her.

Released via Sun Records, Mother is a return to form for Ward—a record that’s brimming with emotional intensity and unfiltered energy. The six tracks are a rollercoaster of sound and emotion, tackling everything from the relentless grind of parenthood to the loneliness that can accompany even the most celebrated milestones.

Ward’s latest single, “I Have No One,” captures the essence of the EP’s darker moments. Layered with sombre horns and backing vocals, the track feels like a late-night confessional, baring Ward’s soul in a way that few of her previous songs have. It’s a stark contrast to the EP’s fiery opener, “Mother,” which channels the restless spirit of early Chicago blues with wailing vocals and searing guitar solos.

There are a few surprises here, too. Ward reimagines “Put the Gun Down” and “Lil’ Darlin’” through a dirtied-up, bluesy lens, while her version of the Sun Records classic “Cadillac Man” is an energetic standout, infusing the track with her signature swagger.

With Mother, Ward has made it clear that she’s done compromising. She’s set to take these songs on the road with her “Dirty Sun Tour,” kicking off next month. If the EP is any indication, fans should expect a powerhouse performance that’s as dynamic and unapologetic as the music itself.
