In 2023, Los Angeles-based alt-pop/rock newcomer Mothica made her debut in the UK at the Reading/Leeds Festival. A new name to most people, her performance was both mesmerizing and unforgettable and she quickly saw her name being added to ‘Ones to Watch Again’ lists. Having impacted the alternative scene, Mothica returned recently for her own headline tour. This Manchester date was one of three very sold out in the UK which formed part of a wider European run. It came as no surprise to find that the Manchester date had been upgraded from Deaf Institute to Gorilla.

Joining Mothica for this run of shows was Atlanta glam rock quartet Starbenders, who provide an interesting touring partner for the nu-pop/rock stylings of the headliner. The complete opposite stylistically to the headliner, Starbenders don’t quite set the room alight as a band of this nature should especially in a room as intimate as this but, by the end, vocalist Kimi Shelter and the rest of the band were starting to show hints of what they were capable of.

Mothica has no problems holding the room’s attention. Having just released her Kissing Death album, all eyes are on the Los Angeles singer for the hour or so she is on stage. Her music is haunting yet hooks you in matching her performance as she explores the deeply personal themes of her music. Kissing Death is represented by a number of tracks including opener “The Void,” “Mirage,” and “Afterlife.”

Working through her set, the singer is open about the themes of her songs while covers of Bring Me The Horizon’s “Can You Feel My Heart?” and Smash Mouth’s “All Star” break up the set. The former an almost perfectly haunting and emotional insert midway through the set, the latter a strange choice of cover but one that brings the set to a close leaving everyone heading home in a more upbeat mood.

Our photographer Katie Probert headed down to the gig and you can check out her gallery of photos here along with Mothica’s setlist.
