When it comes to the Joel Frahm Trio, egos and personalities are set aside all in pursuit of that one common goal. That one common goal is, of course, the music, the quality and the craftsmanship of it, which the band maintain such a sharp focus on. You can hear it in their new song “Loo-Lee,” for which the group shot an in-studio music video.
It’s a track off of their sophomore album Lumination which was released earlier this month via Anzic Records. Following some extensive global touring together, the trio feel good about where their sound is. So they made sure to get it all down on tape, recording a delectable album for any modern jazz fan.
Discussing the song’s origins, Frahm states:
“‘Loo-Lee’ is a composition written by our incredibly talented drummer, Ernesto Cervini. The song was written in dedication to his niece Alma Lev-Ari, who they affectionately called ‘Loo-Lee’ when she was younger. The tune quickly became a band and crowd favourite as soon as it was added to our repertoire.”
Aside from Frahm on tenor saxophone, the trio also features Dan Loomis on acoustic bass and Ernesto Cervini on drums (whose own recordings we have featured extensively over the last couple of years). The real goal behind Lumination was to really emphasize what this group is all about. Frahm wanted to record an album that features their unique democratic dialogue and interplay. There’s lots of variety on here and definitely loads of improvisation. That’s really where the whole fascination is for them: how can they challenge themselves in a new and unique way?
Many of the tracks on Lumination feature both their energy and the interesting interplay between the members. It’s not an album with a lot of “rules,” which is what makes it memorable. Frahm is using the album as a springboard to the future for the collective and a vehicle for their still-developing collective imagination.
