Vivid, dramatic, and emotionally gripping, Harvey Springfield has upped the ante with his latest music video for “Shelter in the Graveyard.” The song was previously included on his latest album, Dark Sides, released earlier this year. But now, Springfield has reinvented it into a powerful duet between him and singer-songwriter FJ. FJ, well-known within the Brighton indie scene, perfectly complements Springfield’s sensational vocals. The video features some stunning visuals and is an ideal accompaniment, particularly with Halloween arriving next week.
Discussing the video and its inspirations, Springfield states:
“We’re excited to share this concept video which encapsulates what the song is about. We know many people in the music scene who have struggled with social anxiety, particularly after the COVID lockdowns but there’s something comforting in friendship and sharing intimacy. This song was directly inspired by one of those situations and we hope other people can relate.”
Springfield has described this as a one-off collaboration with FJ. When he was originally recording “Shelter in the Graveyard,” he knew he wanted to record a duet version with a female vocalist. But it took some time for him to find the right person whose vocal range was different than his. FJ is able to complement the song by matching its both tragic and romantic mood.
The lyrics of the song describe a couple who find more comfort amongst the dead than the living. The quiet of the cemetery is preferable to the chaos of the living. Springfield describes the song as partly autobiographical. He enjoys the calmness that comes with the environment of a cemetery, so much so that he might even forget to leave before it closes. Whether it’s spending time in a cemetery or not, “Shelter in the Graveyard” is a metaphor for finding your own piece of mind in a rather hectic world.
