Grace Kay – “Actress” [Song Review]

Los Angeles-based indie-pop/bedroom pop artist Grace Kay unveils her new single, “Actress,” a pop anthem about reclaiming personal power.
Kay explains, “The theme of ‘Actress’ is how I molded and transformed myself into someone I didn’t recognize; someone that would fit perfectly into ‘this guy’s’ life.”
After attending an all-girls high school, Kay studied at the University of Southern California, where she took a degree in acting. Her sound amalgamates synth-pop production, complex rhythms, and upmarket vocals. It’s a sound suggestive of MUNA, The Japanese House, Imogen Heap, and Caroline Polachek.
Kay’s music has been featured in elite media outlets and appeared on Spotify’s Fresh Finds and Fresh Finds: Pop, as well as sync placements on ABC’s A Million Little Things, CBS’s True Lies, and MTV’s West Coast Hustle.
The emerging swirling intro to “Actress” flows into percolating synths riding crisp, pulsating beats as Kay’s nuanced vocals imbue the lyrics with ebbing and rising timbres, at once dreamy and hauntingly beautiful. On the chorus, previously suppressed emotions break through, infusing the tune with high, delicately opulent surfaces. A rumbling-lite syncopated outro finishes the song with percussive boldness.
Blending a throbbing rhythm and confessional lyrics, Grace Kay constructs a polished play of vulnerability and self-renewal.
