Cousin Simple Deliver Working-Class Punk on New Single “Cincinnati” [Premiere]

When you listen to their music, there’s no denying the working-class roots of Cousin Simple. You can hear it in their brand new single “Cincinnati” the focus track of their aptly titled new EP Part Time Job. An upbeat, colourful slice of modern pop punk, the song features that classic radio sound. It’s defined by its driving guitars and vibrant drums, giving you a sampling of the band’s infectious spirit.

Commenting on “Cincinnati,” the band states:

“‘Cincinnati’ is about that moment when you look up from the map and finally admit that you definitely took a wrong turn somewhere along the line. It’s the anthem that calls a spade a spade. Because we both know where this is going—she loves me, she loves me not. Getting part-time love like it’s our part-time job.”

The brainchild of Columbus, Ohio natives Will Hoag and Ryan Ulibarri, Part Time Job is the band’s most definitive release thus far. The EP speaks to the pair’s working-class roots that featured no shortcuts to the notoriety they are receiving now. Each of them has worked multiple part-time jobs, and these five new songs are dedicated to those who are gutting it out, day by day, hour by hour.

Hoag and Ulibarri have been best friends since the first grade. Their tastes in music developed simultaneously, and they started taking it seriously by their early teen years. They spent early mornings and late nights rehearsing in their parents’ garages.

It became apparent fairly early on that Hoag and Ulibarri were actually good at playing music. Encouraged by their progress, they began collaborating with some local friends in the music scene. This led to the formation of Cousin Simple, and they began to receive local recognition. They have become well-traveled in recent years, having played in major cities like Chicago, New York City, Washington DC, and Boston. That working-class background and attitude have paid off as Cousin Simple continues to evolve into one of America’s most noteworthy young bands.
