Saturday, September 28, was a true celebration of rock, with Call Me Amour headlining their first major show at London’s iconic Camden Underworld, supported by Gürl and Chaos Reigns. The energy from all three bands was palpable, making for an unforgettable night for fans of metal, hardcore, and heavy alt-rock.
The night started with Chaos Reigns, a band that brought a whirlwind of energy to the stage. Their vocalist wasted no time diving straight into the mosh pit, embodying the spirit of metal with a fearless approach. They kept the momentum high, with the guitarist also stepping into the heart of the chaos as the show progressed. Their set culminated in a final request for the audience to give their all one last time, ending on an electrifying note.
Next up was Bristol-based alt-rock head-bangers Gürl, who kept the energy levels soaring. The female bassist was particularly captivating, delivering a heavy, deep bass groove while complimenting the lead singer’s impressive vocal delivery. The chemistry within the band was evident, with the guitarist taking the spotlight for some outstanding solos centre stage. Gürl brought a fresh yet familiar take on heavy alt-rock, impressing even those who had no prior knowledge of the band.
Gürl are a band to watch, and whilst there were moments within some of their tunes that didn’t quite meet the quality of their overall performance, do not let this dissuade you from checking out their 2024 EP, Parma Violence.
The moment Call Me Amour took the stage; the already electric atmosphere shifted up a gear. The crowd erupted in cheers, clearly ready for something special, meaning expectations were high for the band’s debut headlining performance. From the outset, lead vocalist Harry Radford clarified that this wasn’t just another gig! It was to be a true interaction between the band and fans. Radford spent several moments throughout the night embedded within the crowd, engaging with the audience through sing-alongs, hugs, and even some birthday shoutouts.
One standout moment was when Radford, during one of the audience interactions, encouraged the fans to, at one point during the show, deliver their signature dance move. This was demonstrated expertly by guitarist Geoff Murphy. This playful back-and-forth kept the energy high as they launched into their fan-favourite tune, “Tourniquet,” with the crowd waving in time to the music.
Call Me Amour’s performance was peppered with personal touches, such as Radford taking a fan’s sign (after learning they had travelled all the way from Switzerland) and his aforementioned frequent forays into the audience to harmonize with them directly, particularly for “La La.” One such moment came during the semi-heavy, partially fast-paced ballad “Deeper,” which beautifully contrasted their otherwise high-octane set.
Other highlights included the “IMFKD,” which saw guest vocals from LinaDrae, adding an extra layer of depth to an already impressive song. Later, their most recent single, “Bloom,” sparked a wild reaction from the crowd, with bras flying towards the stage like Tom Jones himself was present and the first crowd surfer of the night making their way over the crowd, bouncing their way to the front.
Call Me Amour also knew how to work the crowd with covers, including a raucous rendition of The Prodigy’s “Firestarter,” which triggered fans to erupt into a mosh pit, during which a cheeky dedication to Benji Webb of Skindred, Radford directed the crowd to recreate Skindreds infamous Newport Helicopter move, further cementing the bond between the band and fans.
As the show reached its climax, Radford took one last moment to thank the crowd before launching into “Girl on The Wall”. By the end, it was clear that Call Me Amour isn’t just another rock band; they’re on the verge of true stardom. With their unique yet familiar sound, electrifying performances, and Radford’s undeniable charisma, the future is bright for this multinational rock collective.
Call Me Amour’s first headlining show was an unquestionable triumph. Every moment, from crowd interactions to high-energy performances from all three bands, was masterfully crafted to leave the audience buzzing. If they continue to release music and perform at this calibre, they’ll undoubtedly rise to the top of the rock world.
