For more than two decades, acclaimed guitarist Simon Angell and drummer Tommy Crane have collaborated with luminaries across the jazz, indie rock, and experimental music worlds. Now, after years of distinguished work with celebrated artists, Angell and Crane are turning their focus inward, launching their own project as a dynamic instrumental duo.

Their debut album, Angell & Crane, was born out of free-form studio sessions that pushed boundaries and embraced a new sonic frontier. These sessions, featuring alto saxophonist Charlotte Greve and vocalist Sarah Rossy as guest artists, produced over 40 hours of improvisations, all captured with precision through an extensive array of microphones and inputs. What emerged is a uniquely textured soundscape that Angell and Crane meticulously sculpted into a focused 40-minute album.

Angell comments:

“Jazz and improvisational music tend to prioritize live, unedited recordings, often forsaking the possibilities of studio manipulation. But for us, the studio became an essential tool in shaping our sound. We were inspired by innovators like Teo Macero and Makaya McCraven, who used production as a form of expression.”

The result is a sonic tapestry that draws on the influences of ECM-style jazz, ambient drone, and the raw intensity of “no wave” punk. The album’s sound is as unpredictable as it is immersive—shuddering, shimmering, and shattering across the listener’s auditory senses.

Angell & Crane will be released worldwide on Friday, November 8, 2024, via For The Living And The Dead. This adventurous album represents a bold step into new musical territories for both artists, blending hunger for exploration with masterful craftsmanship.
