It’s strange to think that while they’ve played on some of the biggest festivals in the UK, this eight-date set of shows across the UK is the debut headlining tour from Leeds/Newcastle rock quintet VENUS GRRRLS. It’s been a tumultuous journey getting to this point, but the group set off into this run fresh from a storming appearance at Leeds Festival this year.

A year which has also seen the band support Sprints on their sold-out UK tour, along with festival appearances at Liverpool Sound City, Y Not, Kendal Calling and Stockton Calling under the collective belts, has turned the band into a force to be reckoned with. Supporting the band in Manchester were Macclesfield three-piece Queen Cult, who describe themselves as “unapologetically queer” and are already selling-out headline shows of their own off the back of a slew of heavily-supported EPs and singles.

VENUS GRRRLS have no problem owning a venue like this. Partnering with the Anthony Nolan Foundation following vocalist Grace Kelly’s recent battle with acute myeloid leukemia, it comes as no surprise that these dates come charged with passion and emotion. None more so than in the conversations between Kelly and the crowd.

Recent singles like “Darla” and “Bloodsick” pepper their set list, and given the themes of female friendship, body issues and empowerment, it’s no surprise that the alternative community have taken VENUS GRRRLS to their hearts with the bond between the band and fans equally as strong as that between the individual band members. The band and, in particular, vocalist Kelly might have been through an emotional wringer in recent months, but as this Manchester date wraps things up, it’s a debut headline tour, which looks like the start of an exciting new chapter for the band.
