The almighty Sevendust rolled into the Capital Region to command the stage at Empire Live in Albany, New York, for night three of the 21st-anniversary tour celebrating their fourth album, Seasons. Released on October 7th, 2003, it’s regarded as one of the group’s most well-received albums, seeing several chart appearances led by the first single, “Enemy.” This record was also dedicated to the late Drowning Pool frontman, Dave Williams and Lajon Witherspoon’s younger brother, Reginald, who tragically passed in 2002.

Guitarist Clint Lowery cannot participate in these dates due to a recent neck injury announced by the band three days before the opening night in Hampton Beach, New Hampshire. Hot off Metallica’s “M72 World Tour,” Jon Jourdan of Mammoth WVH received Lowery’s blessing to step in with enough time for one rehearsal before they hit the road. The setlist was exactly what is to be expected of an anniversary show. They played Seasons front to back with an encore of hits that surprisingly included “Pieces” instead of the fan favourite, “Denial.”

Sevendust has widely been considered as one of the best live rock bands for almost three decades. Their live show possesses many layers of performance such as founding member Vinnie Hornsby’s stage presence, John Connelly’s technicality and backing vocals, and Morgan Rose’s theatrics. Each member contributes an incredible amount to the overall foundation of the group’s sound which gives their production a heroic conviction that feels monumental.

Witherspoon’s vocal consistency allows him to replicate the recordings without forfeiting full control over his melodic articulation to make every performance its own whilst freely engaging with the crowd between breaths. Rose’s showmanship needs no rest as he could barely stay planted in his seat and would basically play standing for a majority of the first few songs. Rose would also occasionally throw his drumsticks into the crowd and around the stage, ultimately launching them into the back banner after he punched his final note.

Although Sevendust is currently wrapping up the Northeastern portion of these dates, there is still plenty of time to catch them as they pursue the Southwestern region for the remainder of the tour before concluding in Salt Lake City, Utah on October 8th. They will also be performing on day one of Sacramento’s Aftershock Festival taking place at Discovery Park on October 10th.
