Why do we go to concerts? For most people, it is to see our favourite band perform the songs we love to hear. Sometimes, the desire to see a show doesn’t extend beyond that point. When it comes to German power metallers Powerwolf, there is a whole other aspect to the concert beyond the music. It is the spectacle. You’re getting more than just the music. You’re getting a light show, impressive backdrops, all kinds of theatrical interactions and enough firepower to singe a photographer’s baseball cap. Powerwolf brought all of this with them to the Place Bell in Laval and still left a rabid crowd begging for more.

The concert began with a set from Canadian power metal band Unleash The Archers. These guys, featuring lead singer Brittney Slayes, are a thrill to watch live. The band is all over the stage, jumping, running and dancing, using more energy than my output for a year. Maybe two. Brittney’s voice is awesome, and it’s not hard to see why Unleash The Archers are one of the top-rising bands in the Great White North. Their sixth album, Phantoma, was released earlier this year.

They opened their set with their classic song “Abyss” before playing two others from that new album, “Ghosts In The Mist” and “Green & Glass.” They closed their set with “Northwest Passage,” a Canadian classic by Stan Rogers, which receives a modern metal edge from these musical Canadian travellers. The band left quite an impression on everyone in attendance.

Soon after, the lights dimmed once more as a very elaborate stage set-up that looked like a gothic church dominated the stage. Singer Atilla Dorn and keyboardist Falk Maria Schlegel slowly made their way out to the massive roars of the crowd. Their sermon in power metal was ready to be delivered and received by the huddled masses. The guitars roared to life before flames shot from the stage with the intensity to purify by fire all in attendance.

Huge in Europe, Powerwolf also has a large fanbase on this side of the ocean. Many got in on the fun themselves, dressing up in their best Powerful garb and face paint for the occasion. Powerwolf’s latest album, their tenth, Wake Up The Wicked, was released earlier this year. They opened their set with the first track from that new album, “Bless ‘Em With The Blade,” which set the tone for the next two hours.

The show in Laval marked the end of their North American tour, but they will surely return to these parts again soon. Ready to provide their fans with every musical and visual experience that any concertgoer desires. Be sure to see the show when it arrives near you.
