There are gigs where, on the surface, the bands all sit neatly within under the umbrella of one particular genre, but for diehards of the genre, that little bit of knowledge knows that you’re going to get more than just a bunch of bands sounding the same when you spend your hard-earned money on a ticket. This line-up was a perfect example of that with all three bands, to the casual fan, all easily pushed under the metalcore tag but, to the fine-tuned ear, three bands who all offer something completely different.

Opening the bill were the dark, heavy moshpit ready sounds of Ten56. fronted by former Betraying The Martyrs vocalist Aaron Matts. Sitting at the more brutal end of the metalcore spectrum, the band crushed through an eight-song set with “Diazepam” and “Good Morning” quickly jolting the pit into life.

Next up were Parisian outfit Novelists who brought a whole different dimension to this night with their progressive sounds.Of course there were stacks of breakdowns mixed into their anthems but the progressive layers to offerings like “Mourning The Dawn”, certainly grabbed hold of the attention of this sold-out Electric Ballroom.

The icing on this particular live music cake was the eagerly return to the UK of Australian progressive/tech/djent/metalcore stars Northlane who were just about wrapping up the UK leg of their current European tour with this London show which, unsurprisingly, was packed to the rafters. Opening with “Carbonized”, it’s fair to say the band were on fire. Drenched in sweat, fans sang and screamed along to every emotional, anthemic lyric.

Again, a different prospect to the other bands on the bill, Northlane cover all aspects of the genre from the big breakdowns, the emotional lyrics and the bouncy djent-y sections. Add in lashings of progressive passages and you have a band that drip quality in both their music and their delivery. Ending the evening with “Citizen”, a track which embodies every element into four and a half brilliant minutes and is the perfect way to close out this brilliant showcase for the metalcore genre.

V13’s Mihail Hristov headed into London to check out this killer three-band bill and you can check out his photo gallery below, along with the Northlane set list:
