Indonesian Trio Manja Share Video for Introspective Single “Wax & Feathers” [Premiere]
Indonesia’s Manja get introspective on their latest single “Wax and Feathers.” Check out our premiere of the video here…
Following on from the recent release of their vibrant and joyful “My Oh My”, Indonesian Bali-based alternative pop-rock trio Manja returns with their most introspective single yet, “Wax & Feathers”.
This intensely personal track, inspired by lead vocalist James Sukadana’s past struggles with mental health, showcases the band’s ability to blend reflective lyricism with their signature sound, making it a poignant addition to their growing repertoire of stirring songs.
The accompanying music video, shot by award-winning Indonesian director and visual artist Andrea Wijaya, holds a special significance for James. Filmed on top of a cliff at Mount Papandayan in West Java, the video beautifully captures the song’s emotional journey.

“Wax & Feathers”, however, marks a significant evolution in their artistic expression. They explored their vulnerability while maintaining their trademark sound with the help of Romanian music producer, composer, and sound designer Vladimir Coman-Popescu, who produced the single:
“We were stuck with the initial version of the song for so long, we just could not manage to progress for some reason. Then Vlad presented his new arrangement to us, and we tweaked it over a couple of Zoom calls. Voilà! We were all so happy about it in the end.”
The track chronicles James’ journey of self-discovery and healing. It began in Australia, where he sought purpose and a sense of belonging. Despite his initial hopes, he was engulfed in darkness, leading him to return to Bali for a fresh start. “All that falling is part of the journey. It’s not a failure as long as you can pick yourself up from it and dust yourself off,” James reflects.
In “Wax & Feathers”, James confronts the male tendency to dwell on past mistakes, using the song as a form of acceptance and the manifestation of a brighter, better tomorrow. The bridge, a highlight of the track, captures this sentiment perfectly: “I know now I was wrong/Lights fade, but fires burn along/I see now this is right where I belong.”
With “Wax & Feathers”, MANJA cements their reputation as masterful songwriters and humans unafraid to explore the depths of vulnerability. “Wax & Feathers” is available on all digital streaming platforms starting September 12, 2024.
