No matter how the scene changes, there will always be a place for artists like Kit Major. You’ll surely agree after checking out the music video for her latest single “Sponge.” It’s off of her new EP, Love.Sick.Major., which will be released on October 25th. The video feels kind of retro and riot grrrl which goes well with a song that’s just brimming over with attitude. There’s also a DIY vibe about the video clip, consistent with Major’s garage rock approach to her music.

With no need for elaborate intros or excessive solos, “Sponge” wastes no time getting to the point. Clocking in at just under two minutes, it’s got both grit and groove, with a sound and feel somewhat reminiscent of Bleach-era Nirvana. It comes on the heels of the success of her recently released, high-energy single “Garbage Planet.”

Discussing the song, Major states:

“To me, being a sponge means absorbing and internalizing other people’s thoughts and opinions about you. It’s not just about the pressure to conform but also about how it shapes your identity—sometimes without you even realizing it. This absorption can come from many places, whether it’s generational trauma, societal expectations, or the need to fit in. It’s about moulding yourself to meet other people’s standards or ideals, and how that can blur the lines between who you really are and who others want you to be. The song explores that tension, and the struggle of finding your own voice amid all the noise.”

As an artist, Major is capable of straddling and amalgamating many different genres and eras. It’s post-punk, but also psychedelic and modern, with a foundation in classic rock. Her approach to songwriting and live performing is reminiscent of the rebellious spirit of the CBGBs scene of the late ’70s.

Based in Los Angeles, Major has used Love.Sick.Major. as a platform to put on display her unique interpretation of punk rock. The riffs are very groove-oriented, with Major invoking the spirit of American grunge and ’90s Brit Pop. There are certain artists that get elevated by a certain scene and then there are timeless artists like Kit Major. This is an EP that could appeal to a 17-year-old or a 70-year-old fan of rock n’ roll. No matter how you categorize it, she’s here to inspire a much-needed blast of attitude.
