The cheer that goes up for Jungle is massive when they take the stage for the penultimate show of the Piece Hall’s 2024 programme – and it was more than justified as the show that followed was one of those that people will be saying they were at in 15-20 years from now.

With the band in silhouette and an impressive graphic display playing on the big screen behind them, they opened the set with the breakout hit “Busy Earnin’” and instantly got everybody dancing. Their uplifting sound transported the audience to another plane with a set that pulled from their four critically acclaimed albums, most coming from their 2023 release Volcano.

The electronic dance project, formed by Josh Lloyd-Watson and Tom McFarland, creates a multi-layered sound that is purposefully crafted to get bodies moving, full of delicious disco, funk and soul – with groove-driven rhythms, funky drums and vocal harmonies to die for, the crowd responded joyously by dancing all night.

An exquisite chorus of “Yorkshire! Yorkshire! Yorkshire!” from the audience was elicited as the band introduced their Northern drummer, who hails from nearby Hebden Bridge.

The highlights were plentiful, but the dreaminess of “Beat 54” and the Pharell Williams-esque “Back on 74” with its falsetto vocals ranked highly on the enjoyability scales. The party vibes in the iconic courtyard of the Piece Hall were outstanding, and the whole night had a wonderful feel-good vibe.

It was a show that lifted the spirits and truly made everyone feel great. Almost impossibly, the shows this summer at The Piece Hall have seemingly gotten better and better as they have gone on. With this being the 6th of 7 in its final week, with incredible nights from PJ Harvey, Pixies, and Fatboy Slim already having raised the bar it’s a feat that Jungle should feel great about, too.
