Forest Claudette – ‘Jupiter & Stone Between’ [EP] [Album Review]
‘Jupiter & Stone Between’ is a wonderful EP, lustrous and burnished by the superlative, satiny voice of Forest Claudette.
Alt-pop/R&B artist Forest Claudette releases their new EP, Jupiter & Stone Between, an amalgamation of their 2024 projects. Jupiter explores identity, whereas & Stone Between probes the emotional depths of life and love.
Forest Claudette shares, “If men are from Mars and women are from Venus, maybe I could be from Jupiter. ‘Jupiter’ represents a home and safe place for all non-binary babies to live. ‘& Stone Between’ is a representation of the realities of life. So that’s what they mean separately, but together I see it like a sort of journey. If not to Jupiter, then at least toward it, and the stone between are asteroids and other planets and stars that I pass or visit along the way.”
Jupiter & Stone Between encompasses nine tracks divided into Disc 1 and Disc 2. Highlights on Disc 1 include the addictive swaying rhythm of “Kobe Beef,” topped by smooth, luminous falsetto vocals on the chorus. For some reason, Claudette’s vocals summon up memories of Prince, giving the lyrics a charming, posh feel.
The skiffy guitar riffs of “Big Wigs” ride a funk-lite rhythm as cool, brass accents flow overhead, infusing the tune with glossy textures. A personal favourite because of its low-slung, velvety melody, “Moonlight” moves like warm honey, creating a quixotic milieu. Claudette’s silky-smooth vocals imbue the tune with just the right surface hues.
“2AM” travels on R&B and soul flavours with hints of funk working through. There’s a carefree sensation to Claudette’s vocals, like Bobby Brown merged with Michael Jackson. The voluptuous motion of “Press On Me” evokes a sensual association as Claudette’s vocals reveal a delicious sing-song-like flow, injecting the tune with an erotic mood.
Jupiter & Stone Between is a wonderful EP, lustrous and burnished by the superlative, satiny voice of Forest Claudette.
